There are many reasons why student athletes choose to take advantage of a post graduate or gap year. Main reason being that an additional year enables another year of maturity, growth and development both on and off the court prior to enrolling and competing in basketball at the collegiate level. Perhaps there was not exposure to college coaches during a student athletes high school career. Perhaps there was a decent amount of exposure to college coaches and the feedback was that a post graduate year would be beneficial. Perhaps a player was playing behind a higher level player in high school. The list goes on and on. Also a post grad year does not use a year of eligibility. Academically, a post graduate year allows for students to begin college level courses at a slower, self paced schedule as opposed to jumping right into a full time course load with a minimum number of credits per semester.
It should also be noted that PPG eagerly welcomes high school seniors. A student athlete could finish their high school curriculum online while competing for PPG on the court. Many seniors anticipating their senior year of high school are coming to the realization that high school competition and level of play is not necessarily preparing them for college level competition.
